SD2 (Ger. Sprengbombe Dickwandig 2 kg, Butterfly Bomb ) is a German air bomb, which is essentially an air subammunition from the Second World War. The basis of a single SD2 was a body made of cast iron with a diameter of 76 mm, and the mass of the explosive charge did not exceed 225 grams. Most often, this role was played by the so-called amatol. SD2s were most often used against surface targets, but also against enemy infantry and unarmored vehicles. Subammunition of this type was either carried by a special "ejector" or in cluster bombs, such as, for example, AB 23 or AB 250-3. The Luftwaffe is believed to have used SD2 for the first time during the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940. Later, this type of subammunition was used, inter alia, during the fighting on the Eastern Front (1941-1945), and very intensively during Operation Barbarossa (summer 1941). The SD2 aircraft submunition could be carried by many types of German aircraft, including, for example: the Fw-190 F / G or the Me-262. It is worth adding that the SD2 was one of the first effective subammunition in the history of wars.
